Dyslexia

Shepherd ISD dyslexia services are designed to provide short-term reading intervention for students identified as having characteristics of dyslexia. Services are offered to students who qualify in all grades. Instructional components include explicit, systematic, and sequential multi-sensory instruction. Specialists providing dyslexia intervention are trained in dyslexia intervention strategies. Those strategies target the five areas of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The goal of the dyslexia intervention program is for students to become fluent in literacy development. 
 
Student Eligibility
 
Shepherd ISD employs a proactive approach in identifying reading disabilities, such as dyslexia through early identification and intervention. Through our Student Success Initiative (RTI) process, we are able to accomplish early identification. During the school year, struggling students in reading are referred to a variety of special programs for testing. Parents may also initiate a request for referral for dyslexia at any time. Parents who wish to refer their student for testing should contact the school's counselor.
