Harvey Further Impacts SISD

Parents and Community members,

Due to the impact of Hurricane Harvey, Shepherd ISD and many others school districts were forced to cancel classes for the week of August 28, 2017. Per the Texas Education Code, schools must be in session at least 75,600 minutes a year.  The loss of the five days will cause the district to miss that mark by 200 minutes – even after T.E.A. waives 2,100 minutes.

When considering ways to recapture the 200 minutes, we wanted to find a way which caused as little disruption to parents and the current instructional calendar as possible.

From the possibilities considered, It was agreed our best option is add five minutes to the end of the school day starting Monday, October 9th and ending Thursday, December 21st. When students return to school after the Christmas break, we will revert to our normal bell times.

The new, temporary hours will be:

Primary/Intermediate      7:50 – 3:35

Middle/High                     7:50 – 3:45
